Special handling and storage of remedies is needed if one is to avoid contamination of the remedies. If you suspect that a remedy has been contaminated you are advised to dispose of it. When remedies are correctly stored, homoeopaths have found that they can last for many generations. Since it's very difficult to tell whether a remedy has been contaminated or not, the following precautions are recommended to prevent problems. Do not expose the remedies to :

  • Strong sunlight
  • Temperatures above 100 degrees
  • Strong odors (like camphor, menthol, mothballs etc)
  • Perfumes
  • Keep the remedies in the container in which they were supplied and never transfer to any container which has contained other substances.
  • The remedy container should only be opened for the minimal time necessary and be careful so as not to contaminate cork or cap before replacement.

If by accident more pillules that the number required spill out of the container do not return them. Throw the excess away.

The remedy should be taken in a 'clean mouth'. Food, drink, tobacco, tooth paste and any other substances should not be put into the mouth fifteen minutes before or after the remedy is taken. The remedy is best placed under the tongue and allowed to dissolve. Try to avoid biting the remedy.

Some substances have been found to neutralise the effects of homoeopathic remedies and should be avoided. The causative factors are not totally understood but you are recommended to avoid the following substances whilst taking remedies :

  • Coffee
  • Herbal teas
  • Metholated products
  • Cough drops
  • Mouthwash
  • Camphorated products (lip balm, muscle relaxing cremes, tiger balm)

If you are not a qualified homoeopath you are advised to stick to the potency widely available over the counter in health food shops. This will generally be marked 6x or 6c (the sixth potency) or 30c (the 30th potency). Homoeopathic remedies are more powerful the more they experience a process called 'potentization' - the process of dilution and shaking. Only qualified Homoeopaths should use the higher potencies.

The basic principle to follow in order to determine dosage is the more severe the condition - the more repetition of remedy will be required.

Acute Conditions...

  • 6x every 15-30 minutes
  • 6c every 15-60 minutes
  • 30c every 15 minutes to once a day

Chronic Conditions...

  • 6x 3 - 4 times per day
  • 6c 2 - 3 times per day
  • 30c once a week

You should stop taking a remedy immediately the symptoms have ceased.
